What is a 50/50 in Minesweeper?

A 50/50 is a situation where two cells are equally likely to contain a mine and no logical deduction can tell you which one. Both arrangements satisfy every number constraint on the board, so the information to decide simply does not exist. You must guess.

Can a Minesweeper game come down to a 50/50

Yes - in Standard mode it happens regularly, especially near the end of a board. As you clear cells, the remaining hidden region can shrink to a pocket where two mine placements are perfectly symmetric to every surrounding number. At that point there is genuinely nothing left to read, and the game becomes a coin flip. This is the one place Minesweeper stops being pure logic, which is why "is Minesweeper ever a 50/50?" is such a common question.

Where 50/50s appear

The classic shapes show up in the same places game after game:

• Corners - a mine hidden in one of two corner cells with identical constraints.
• End-of-wall segments - a 1 at the end of a long border whose last two cells are interchangeable.
• Detached regions - small sealed pockets the rest of the board cannot reach with information.

How to guess a 50/50 - and check it is really one

Many "50/50s" are not. Before you guess, check two things. First the mine counter: if only one mine remains and your two candidate regions would each need a mine, one region is provably empty. Second the far side of the frontier: a constraint several cells away often reaches in and breaks the tie. Experienced players resolve a surprising share of apparent coin flips this way. When it genuinely is a 50/50, guess *immediately* - the seconds spent re-verifying a true coin flip are pure loss on the clock.

When is it a true 50/50 versus better odds

Not every guess is an even one. Sometimes one region carries a 1-in-3 risk while another carries 1-in-2, and the whole skill of guessing is finding the lower number. Count the mines each constrained region needs against the cells it spans, and compare that to the global average (mines remaining divided by hidden cells remaining). Click into the lowest-risk cell, and where two cells tie on odds, prefer the one most likely to open fresh information so even a survived guess advances the solve.

Is Minesweeper always solvable without guessing

In Standard mode, no - boards are not guaranteed to be fully solvable, which is precisely why true 50/50s exist.
