What is the largest Minesweeper board?

The largest standard board is Expert at 30x16, which is 480 cells. On this site a custom board can go up to 50x50 - 2,500 cells, roughly five Expert boards end to end.

Why there is an upper limit

Two reasons, and neither is arbitrary. Very large boards take long enough that a single forced guess deep into a run wastes a great deal of work. And mines are capped at 85% of the cells with at least nine cells always kept free, because the first click is guaranteed safe and needs somewhere to open.

What large boards are actually good for

Not speed. A 2,500-cell board is an endurance exercise in board reading, and it is where 3BV stops being abstract - a board that size can carry a 3BV in the high hundreds, and the gap between an efficient route and a careless one runs to thousands of clicks. If you want a harder board rather than a longer one, raise the mine density instead of the dimensions.
