What is the difference between Minesweeper and No-Guessing mode?
The rules are identical. The difference is which boards you are allowed to see: standard Minesweeper deals whatever the generator produces, including positions no logic can resolve. No-Guessing tests every board with a solver first and discards any that would force a guess.
How the filtering works
After a board is generated, a solver attempts to clear it using deduction alone - no probability, no guessing. If it gets stuck at any point, the board is thrown away and another is generated. You only ever receive boards that survived that test, so every position in front of you has a logical answer.
What that changes in practice
| Standard | No-Guessing | |
|---|---|---|
| Rules | Identical | Identical |
| Forced 50/50s | Possible | Never |
| Losing means | Mistake or bad luck | Mistake |
| Ranked | Yes | Yes, separate leaderboard |
The mode does not make boards easier - Expert No-Guessing is still 99 mines at 20.6% density. It removes the specific frustration of losing a perfectly played run to a coin flip.
Which should you play
Standard if you want the classic game and the records that go with it, since world records are set on standard boards. No-Guessing if you are learning, because every loss is genuinely instructive, or if forced guesses annoy you more than they entertain you. Both count toward your ranking on separate leaderboards.
