Board comparison

What is the largest Minesweeper board?

The largest standard board is Expert at 30x16, which is 480 cells. On this site a custom board can go up to 50x50 - 2,500 cells, more than five times the cell count of Expert.

Why is there an upper limit?

Minesweeper.now caps custom width and height at 50 cells and also limits the mine count. At least nine cells remain free because this site's first click and its eight neighbours are protected. Those are platform rules, not universal limits on every Minesweeper implementation.

What are large boards useful for?

Large boards extend the amount of board reading without changing the basic number rules. Size alone does not prove how difficult an exact layout is. Use the 3BV calculator to measure the generated board's clearing workload, and use mine density only as a description rather than a guaranteed difficulty score.
