How the Minesweeper Daily Challenge Works

At midnight UTC a new Expert board — 30×16 cells with 99 mines — is generated from a single shared seed. Every player in the world gets exactly the same mine layout, and everyone gets exactly one official attempt. Win the board and your time joins today's leaderboard; hit a mine and your run is over until tomorrow. Because the puzzle is identical for all players, the daily leaderboard is the purest speed comparison on Minesweeper.now: no board selection, no re-rolling for easy openings, no second chances.

The one-attempt format changes how you should play. On the ranked Expert boards the optimal strategy is to restart until you get a fast opening; here a safe, deliberate solve beats a fast blowup. A completed 200-second run scores; a 40-second attempt that ends on a mine does not.

Daily Challenge Strategy

  • Open away from the edges first. A central opening reveals more cells per click and gives the numbers more context to work with.
  • Slow down at 50/50-looking spots. With one attempt, spend the extra seconds counting mines and cross-referencing numbers — many apparent coin-flips are solvable with standard patterns.
  • Flag deliberately. Wrong flags cause misreads and misclicks late in the board, which is exactly when a daily run hurts most to lose.
  • Check the leaderboard before you start. Today's times tell you how hard the board is playing — a slow top-10 usually means a dense, tricky layout.

Daily Challenge FAQ

Can I retry the daily challenge if I lose?

No — one attempt per day is the whole point. If you hit a mine, your result is locked until tomorrow's board.

Is the board really the same for everyone?

Yes. The board is built from one shared daily seed, so rankings compare times on an identical puzzle rather than luck of the draw.

When does a new daily challenge start?

A fresh board is generated at midnight UTC every day, and the leaderboard resets with it.
