The formations worth memorizing
- 1-1 rule
- Two 1s side by side along a wall are satisfied by the same shared mine, so any covered square that touches only one of them is safe.
- 1-2-1
- The mines sit across from the two 1s and the cell across from the 2 is safe. If the middle cell held a mine it would satisfy both 1s at once, leaving the 2 one short - so it cannot.
- 1-2-2-1
- The mines sit across from the two 2s and the cells across from the end 1s are safe. It resolves two mines and two safe squares at once.
- 2-1-2
- Needs a covered row one cell wider than the numbers - over three cells it cannot exist at all. The mine sits across from the middle 1, plus the far cell at each end, and the cells across from the 2s are safe.
- True 50/50
- Two covered squares, one mine, and no clue anywhere on the board that separates them. Genuinely unsolvable - but far rarer than it looks, which is why you check the whole board before guessing.
