Variants & Versions

Minesweeper has been rebuilt more times than almost any other game, and each version changes something: the first-click guarantee, the mine density, the controls, or in the case of reverse Minesweeper, the objective itself. These guides compare the versions people actually run into, explain the minigames embedded in other games, and cover the variants that are genuinely harder than the original.

How the versions differ

Mine density
Google Minesweeper and the classic Windows game use identical boards: 12.3% on Beginner, 15.6% on Intermediate, 20.6% on Expert.
First click
Modern versions guarantee a useful opening on the first click. Older Windows builds did not, which is the main reason classic feels harder.
Embedded minigames
BitLife and many Roblox experiences use standard Minesweeper rules, so the same number logic transfers directly.
Reverse Minesweeper
The objective inverts - you click the mines and avoid the safe cells - while the numbers still describe mine adjacency.
