What does 3BV mean in Minesweeper?

3BV answers: how much measured clearing work does this layout contain? Two Expert boards can both use 30x16 cells and 99 mines but create different openings. The board with more cells revealed by openings can have a lower 3BV than the more fragmented board.

How is 3BV calculated?

1. Find every connected region of zero-adjacency cells. Each region and the numbered border it reveals count as one opening.
2. Count every other safe cell not revealed by one of those openings.
3. Add the opening count and the remaining safe-cell count.

For example, three openings plus twelve remaining safe cells produce a 3BV of 15. Flags, elapsed time and the player's route do not change the board's 3BV.

How do you calculate 3BV/s?

Divide 3BV by solve time in seconds. A 180-3BV board cleared in 40 seconds is 4.5 3BV/s. A 90-3BV board cleared in 35 seconds is about 2.57 3BV/s. The first run has the slower raw time but the higher measured work rate. This adds context; raw time still determines a time leaderboard.
