Decision guide

What is a 50/50 in Minesweeper?

A 50/50 is a situation where two cells are equally likely to contain a mine and no logical deduction can tell you which one. Both arrangements satisfy every number constraint on the board, so the information to decide simply does not exist. You must guess.

What to do with that answer

Confirm that the choice is truly equal

Do not call a position a 50/50 until you have checked every number that touches either candidate cell. Information from another edge or an overlapping constraint can break the tie. Guess only when both mine arrangements still satisfy the full board.

Can a Minesweeper game come down to a 50/50

Yes - in Standard mode it can happen when the remaining hidden region has two mine placements that are perfectly symmetric to every surrounding number. At that point there is genuinely nothing left to read, and the game becomes a coin flip.

Where 50/50s appear

The classic shapes can appear in several places:

  • Corners - a mine hidden in one of two corner cells with identical constraints.
  • End-of-wall segments - a 1 at the end of a long border whose last two cells are interchangeable.
  • Detached regions - small sealed pockets the rest of the board cannot reach with information.

How to guess a 50/50 - and check it is really one

Many apparent 50/50s are not. Before guessing, check the mine counter and the far side of the frontier for a constraint that breaks the tie. If multiple layouts still satisfy every clue and the remaining mine count equally, the position is genuinely unresolved.

When is it a true 50/50 versus better odds

Not every guess is an even one. Sometimes one region carries a 1-in-3 risk while another carries 1-in-2. Count the mines each constrained region needs against the cells it spans, and compare that with the remaining unconstrained cells. The guide to probability thinking in Minesweeper explains how local constraints and the global mine count work together.

Is Minesweeper always solvable without guessing

In Standard mode, no - boards are not guaranteed to be fully solvable, which is precisely why true 50/50s exist. But it *is* possible to play Minesweeper entirely without guessing if the board is built for it. On Minesweeper.now, No-Guessing mode generates only boards that are fully solvable by logic, so you will never face a true 50/50 and every loss is a missed deduction rather than bad luck. NG results compete in their own ranking pool, and you can sharpen the deductions that break near-50/50s with the pattern guide.
