Win-condition reality check

Can you win Minesweeper every time?

No, not in Standard mode. A board can reach a position where two or more mine layouts satisfy every visible number and the remaining mine count. If no clue distinguishes the choices, a guaranteed win is impossible from the available information.

What to do with that answer

Know when a loss was unavoidable

A standard board is not always logically winnable. Before calling a loss unavoidable, verify that every remaining mine arrangement fits all visible numbers and leaves the candidate cells equally likely. If you want every board to have a logical path, use No-Guessing mode.

When does logic run out?

Logic runs out only after every valid constraint has been considered. A true two-cell 50/50 has one remaining mine and two cells that appear in equally valid layouts. Neither choice is provably safer. The frequency depends on the generator and exact layouts; this site does not publish a measured rate, so it does not claim one by difficulty.

Can No-Guessing mode always be solved?

No-Guessing mode serves only boards that pass a solver check. If the solver reaches a point that requires a guess, that layout is rejected and another is generated. This guarantees a deduction path exists; it does not guarantee the player will find every move.

How do you verify a forced guess?

  1. Check every revealed number touching hidden cells.
  2. Include the total number of unplaced mines.
  3. Compare all mine arrangements that satisfy those constraints.
  4. Call it forced only when multiple arrangements remain and no candidate is safer.

The Minesweeper solver can check a saved position. Before guessing, review the core patterns and the exact definition of a 50/50.
